Summer is a great time for getting away from the normal to explore the world. Road trips can be some of the most eye-opening and educational experiences for young people, but safety with preschoolers cannot be overlooked. Check out these quick tips before setting out on your first adventure with your little one.
1. Pack for safety
This isn’t your college buddy road trip. When taking a preschooler out on the road, it’s important to pack all the essential,s and come over-prepared. Don’t regret skimping on the little things. Every road trip safety pack should start with a first-aid kit. Make sure to think ahead about any allergies or specific medication your child may need on the road. Also be sure to pack wet wipes, a flashlight, warm blankets, bug spray and more water than you think you’ll need.
2. Be sun smart
Stock up on the sunblock. Remember that sunblock is more effective than sunscreen. Your preschooler probably won’t be curating a tan, so get the highest SPF you can find—50 is usually the industry standard. Don’t wait until you’re deep into a national park to buy a sun-resistant hat, because the gift shops will probably overcharge you. Also remember that in addition to being a fashion statement for your preschooler, effective sunglasses can keep your kids’ eyes safe, too.
3. Break up the trip
Sitting in a car for hours on end can be strenuous even for the most patient adult. It’s not surprising how painstaking it can be for your preschooler. Check ahead on your road trip map and itinerary and be sure to build in regular bathroom and stretch breaks, as well as quick entertainment breaks to kill the monotony of the open road. This also serves a huge safety purpose, as it reduces the strain on your vehicle and helps keep you alert, energized and prepared for the long drive ahead.
